Who We Are

Wells Gray Community Forest Corporation (WGCFC), formed in 2006, is a unique, citizen-owned forest in the heart of Wells Gray Country, British Columbia, Canada. We manage 13,148 hectares of land with an Annual Allowable Cut of 29,900 cubic metres of timber, providing jobs and revenues for the community. Our community members manage the forest with a focus on long-term sustainability, environmental stewardship, and supporting local industries. We prioritize land management over profits, ensuring that our natural resources benefit the community now and for generations to come.

What’s New

WGCF Reduces Plastic Footprint, Enhances Sustainable Forestry Practices

In the Wells Gray Community Forest, an average of 200 hectares is planted every year. A common practice in tree planting is to drop plastic flagging ribbon on every planted tree. Over the planting season, an estimated 252,000 feet of single-use plastic is littered in our forests and water systems.

With this practice in place, there were concerns from the cattle industry and fish and wildlife biologists about this damaging practice and its contribution to the plastic problem in our current world.

What did we do? We listened. Throughout the 2023 spring planting program, we marked our seedlings with blue Tree Chalk to reduce our use of plastics.
